Australians divided over rental listing for ‘one bedroom apartment’ built underneath a house: ‘I would rather be homeless thanks’

  • A converted garage is being leased for $350
  • The listing has had mixed reactions from renters

Australians have been left divided over a rental listing advertised as a ‘one bedroom apartment’ located underneath a house.

The ‘fully furnished one bedroom apartment’ in Woolloongabba, in Brisbane’s south, was advertised at $350 per week with all bills included.

Pictures of the property posted to Facebook marketplace show what appears to be a converted area underneath a house, next to a garage.

The current tenant, who said he was looking to break his lease, said the ‘beautiful’ property was ‘walking distance from Woolloongabba stadium’.

‘It’s perfect for a single person or a couple. It has everything you could ask for. You get this apartment fully furnished with all bills included,’ he wrote in the listing.

‘You have the right to the backyard and the front porch as well that allows to park two cars if needed… The garage has remote controlled gate. You just need your clothes to come and settle here.’

The listing drew mixed response from social media users.

One claimed they would ‘rather be homeless’ than inhabit the property, while another attacked the homeowners.

‘I cannot believe these landlords, absolutely disgusting!’ one said.

‘Crawlies, mildew and mould will definitely be a big problem. Would be OK if they had sealed it.’

Several members of a Facebook renters group said the space looked like a ‘fire hazard’.

Others criticised young renters for being too fussy and suggested the price and conditions were acceptable.

‘Bloody ‘ell. It includes everything,’ one comment read.

‘A couple living for $350 a week together is pretty good and cheap. Young ones, it’s called sacrifice.’

But that did not sit well with younger users who pointed out that their generation shouldn’t be forced to sacrifice basic living standards, calling the older commenter a ‘boomer’.

The heated debate comes as the nation grapples with an ongoing housing crisis, with rental vacancies at all-time lows, and significant price increases.
