As Britain’s Got Talent returned to ITV screens in April, the head judge rocked the stylish shades once again but had previously insisted that it was nothing to do with a ‘mystery illness’.

In February, the music mogul, 64, took to his Instagram as he explained to some ‘concerned’ fans that he needs them for health reasons.

Sharing a shot of him wearing the glasses while on the judging panel, he wrote: ‘I just found out according to the internet, I have a ‘mystery illness’.

‘For anyone concerned, I missed two auditions at the end of one day, two weeks ago, because I do get migraines after long days in the filming lights.

He finished off saying: ‘Next week we are filming BGT in Manchester – I look forward to seeing you then. PS. This is why I wear these glasses!’

The show wrapped its auditions in scenes aired on Sunday night, with the semi-finals to be broadcast live over the coming days.

According to ITV, it is the biggest entertainment series of the year so far across any channel.

But the talent contest has still seen a marked drop in its popularity over the years, with the current ratings a long way away from its peak 13 million in 2009.

The current series got off to a promising start last month, with overnight figures showing the launch episode saw an average of 5 million viewers tuning in, with a peak of 5.8 million.
