British designer creates incredible asterisk-shaped home

  • The home has been designed by London-based architect James Whitaker and is due to be built next year
  • It boasts three ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and exoskeleton formed out of shipping containers
  • The so-called Joshua Tree Residence has been commissioned by a film producer to be built in California

It looks like an alien spacecraft crashed in the desert, however this jaw-dropping new structure is set to be someone’s home.

London-based designer James Whitaker has produced photo-realistic renderings of the property, which is due to be built in the Californian desert next year.

The house will be 2150 square feet with three ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and an exoskeleton formed out of shipping containers.

According to Mr Whitaker, the so-called Joshua Tree Residence has been commissioned by a film producer ‘with a background in nurturing creative projects into fruition’.

The design, based on an unbuilt German office building Mr Whitaker created in the past, will be situated on an 90-acre plot.

James explains: ‘Earlier this year my client in LA had some friends visiting and they all went on a road trip to visit the client’s plot of land in Joshua Tree.

‘Whilst there, among the arid landscape and jutting rocks, one of the friends said, “you know what would look great here?”, before opening her laptop to show everyone a picture she’d seen on the internet.

‘The picture was of an office that I’d designed several years ago but had never been built.

‘And so it came to pass that next time the client was in London he got in touch and asked to meet up.’
