His wife drove him to a doctor’s surgery at the nearby village of Dignac where, according to a report in the newspaper Sud Ouest, he died of his injuries.

Gendarmes were called and are investigating.

French newspaper Charente Libre named the victim as David Daniels and said he lived at ‘La Gelie’, a house close to Edon, a village of 270 near the city of Angouleme.

It is close to the Perigord national park and is an area popular with British expats.

Mayor of the village Patrice Petit said that the British man was well known in the village and well liked.
