- New and existing customers are eligible for a 50% discount on Sundays
- British Gas has extended the offer until the end of February 2024
- Customers can also make savings on Christmas Day
British Gas has further extended its offer of half price electricity over winter, and customers can also make savings on Christmas Day.
The energy supplier introduced its PeakSave Sundays offer over the summer, in a bid to get its customers to use power outside of peak hours in the evenings.
It announced an extension to the offer through the winter, which would include Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It has now confirmed the scheme will continue until the end of February 2024.
Half-price Sundays: British Gas is offering its customers a 50% discount on electricity
British Gas also announced that it will offer half price electricity on 25 December through the scheme.
Lower demand from businesses and industry on Sundays means there is more renewable energy available in the power grid, with less need to burn fossil fuels.
Catherine O’Kelly, managing director of British Gas Energy said: ‘The coming months will bring both colder weather and all of the excitement and fun of the festive season.
‘We know many people will be spending more time at home during this period, particularly on Christmas Day, and we wanted to give a little something back to our customers helping them to save on their energy bills while also contributing to a greener grid.’
Customers will receive a 50 per cent discount on all electricity used between 11am and 4pm every Sunday.
While both new and existing customers are eligible for the scheme, they will need a smart meter and will have to sign up to half-hourly reads to take part. All savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills.
British Gas says 425,000 customers have been paid £2.5million for switching their usage to non-peak times.
O’Kelly added: ‘We expect the benefit of these savings to increase through the winter, as home energy usage goes up, and we hope to welcome even more customers to the PeakSave scheme to take advantage of the savings.’
How much could you save on your energy bill?
British Gas’ new deal is set to see the average customer save £30.61 over 13 Sundays and Christmas Day.
On Christmas Day itself, you could save yourself 59p if you use your electric oven for two hours out of peak hours, and a further 56p for using the electric hob.
While this might seem like a small saving, customers who shift their usage to outside of peak hours on Sundays could save £8.23 across 13 Sundays and Christmas.
Customers could also save £2.74 by washing their clothes on a Sunday, and £4.12 if they use a tumble dryer over the period.
And for customers who like to play video games, they could save £4.90 from playing between 11am and 4pm on Sundays.
