British holidaymakers who travel to Benidorm to enjoy the sun and popular nightlife spots, have been warned against gangs in the area.

Tourists are reportedly being targeted by gangs who spike their drinks with date-rape-style drugs and then rob them once they have passed out.

The alarming warning comes as one tourist is said to have awoke on a beach without his shoes, phone and wallet after he had been allegedly targeted in a bar.

Local expats are now taking to social media to issue the warnings with administrators highlighting the high levels of crime plaguing the resort.

The night sky in Benidorm is illuminated from the bustling night life – however tourists have been warned against the danger of pickpockets

The Sun reported that one Facebook group highlighted the incident with the holiday maker who was found on the beach.

In a Facebook post they said: ‘This happened to a guy…..His friends reported him missing. He had been spiked….trainers.. phone wallet etc missing. He was found on the beach

‘Please be Careful…..DON’T LEAVE YOUR DRINKS UNATTENDED.’

The page also warns about pickpockets who actively prey on holidaymakers by portraying themselves as sex workers.

They are said to gather at busy junctions in the Spanish resort and home in on people drunkenly making their way back to their hotels and accommodation.

Spanish authorities are now said to have launched a crackdown on the criminals who are frequently found to be from Eastern Europe.

Earlier this year a Romanian woman was arrested in the resort after stealing £400 from a tourist and for also stealing a £5,000 watch from a pensioner.

This is while another woman was also arrested after she took a wallet from another holidaymaker.

It has also been reported that men sometimes even dress as women to dupe people at the resort and some tourists have even reportedly had their belongings stolen as soon as they step off their transfer busses.

One tourist said a friend had been robbed earlier this year after leaving a popular bar in the resort.

He said: ‘Just walked out of Morgan’s my mate left 2 minutes before us by that time he had been robbed of everything by the prostitutes men dressed as women chased them down the road pimps come out from everywhere police seen us chasing them stopped us just said report it in the morning be careful.’

The warnings come as holiday makers in the area filmed smoke billowing from the Sierra Gelada Mountain, which is around 12 miles away from the popular Aqulandia water park at the resort.

The fire started earlier today for an unknown reason in the upper part of the Serra Gelada natural park, the emergency services said.

Concerns were heightened because of the dry conditions and the proximity to the Aqualandia water park, with the attraction having been closed earlier than normal because of the emergency.
