British man is killed in house fire near upmarket Spanish golf resort

A British man has lost his life in a fire at a house near an upmarket Spanish golf club.

The victim, aged around 50, is believed to have died from smoke inhalation after the blaze broke out at the property on the Alcaidesa Golf & Beach resort.

The fire started around 2.30am on Monday morning.

It is not clear if the Brit, who has not been named, was on holiday or lived in the area.

Several people are said to have been trapped by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

La Alcaidesa is a gated community near Sotogrande, Spain, in the Andalusian province of Cadiz.  

The residential estate where the fire occurred is a 15-minute drive from Gibraltar and very close to Sotogrande, where Prince Andrew spent time this summer.

Alcaidesa boasts two golf courses, making it a popular destination for golf lovers.
