British sixth-former, 17, dies on a school trip to New York after complaining of feeling unwell

A British sixth-former has died in the US on a school trip, it emerged last night. 

Anastasia Uglow, 17, who is thought to have had a pre-existing medical condition, complained of feeling unwell during the visit to New York.

She was with classmates from the £15,000-a-year Bristol Grammar School when she died on Thursday.

Last night, the school said in a statement: ‘It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death in New York of one of our Sixth Form pupils, which occurred on Thursday 19 December while they were on a school trip.

‘We are all devastated by the news and our thoughts are with their family and friends during this extremely difficult time.

‘Our pupils, their parents and our staff have been informed and we are providing support to all those who have been affected by this news.

‘We have opened a book of condolence and we will consider further remembrance with the family’s support in the New Year.

New York police said officers were called to an unconscious 17-year-old girl in a Holiday Inn Express at 11.30am.

She was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital. Doctors are now trying to establish the cause of death.
