British Soap Awards are CANCELLED: ITV make surprise announcement ceremony will not take place next year after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties

The British Soap Awards have been cancelled next year.

ITV have announced the ceremony, which celebrates the best of British soaps, will not take place in 2024.

The broadcaster have not given an explanation as to why it will not take place.

An ITV spokesman said: ‘The British Soap Awards won’t be on air in 2024 but is set to return in 2025.

‘The show was fantastically received in 2023, achieving consolidated figures of 2.9 million and doubling its audience year on year, so we look forward to the show’s return.’

It comes after ITV were thrown into chaos ahead of the ceremony in June after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties.

Bosses had to draft in Jane McDonald as a last minute replacement after confirming the 2023 would go ahead as planned.

The operatic singer and cruise ship favourite was revealed as Phillip’s replacement after he quit ITV and was dropped by his talent agency YMU after admitting to an affair with a young male This Morning colleague.

He confessed to having the ‘unwise but not illegal’ relationship with a man during his marriage to Stephanie Lowe, and previously denied the affair when asked about it by his agent.

The presenter, 61, confirmed in a statement at the time that he has stepped down from all his ITV jobs, including the ceremony.

And amid news Jane was taking the helm, fans hailed the star as the ‘perfect choice’ to front the ceremony.

Ahead of hosting the awards, Jane said: ‘Oh my god…..everyone knows how much I LOVE my soaps, this year I’ve been honoured to be mentioned in Corrie, EastEnders and Emmerdale, so this is just a dream come true.’

With Jane a hit among viewers as host, the sudden cancellation of the ceremony will be a shock to soap fans.

This year, EastEnders’ Danielle Harold took home the Best Leading Performer prize at the award show held at The Lowry in Salford.
