A British traveller has been found dead in ‘suspicious’ circumstances while visiting a city in India popular with back-packers.

The man, believed to be 52, was found dead in his room at the Kashi Guest House in the Chowk Thana area of Varanasi, India in the early hours of this morning.

Police in the city – which is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas and next to the River Ganges – have said that they are treating the death as suspicious.

Local media also reported that he arrived in India on July 18 with his Amercian girlfriend.

They added that the couple had travelled around India after their arrival before reaching Varanasi on September 18.

Police chief Senior Superintendent Anand Kulkarni said that the British traveller had been suffering from a severe bout of stomach pain on the night before he died.

He confirmed that they are treating the death as suspicious and have referred it to the British High Commission in New Dehli.

A spokesperson for Kashi Guest House said staff informed police on Sunday night that the backpacker had fallen ill after complaining of severe stomach pain.

The spokesperson added that staff had encouraged the traveller to go to hospital but claimed that the 52-year-old wanted to stay in his room.

On Monday morning he was found dead on the floor of the room with the door open.

A postmortem is expected to be completed in the coming days.
