It has been reported by local media that the Brit fell from the balcony of the Fragata building and crashed onto a table on a first-floor terrace below.

The pole of the sun umbrella skewered his leg and graphic pictures show it sticking out just above his knee.

The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to establish the nature of the incident and whether or not the man in question had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Civil Guard, police and medics all attended the scene, along with a fire crew, once the severity of his injury had been made apparent.

Emergency services stayed on the scene for at least an hour while the man was stabilised. It is understood that in order to get him to hospital, the umbrella was sawn off so the pole could be removed by surgeons.

He has been admitted to Can Misses hospital in Ibiza and is in a serious condition.
