British tourists FUME as towels are taken away from reserved loungers by Mallorca hotel staff…but others praise pool police for clamping down on ‘selfish’ behaviour

  • Workers were seen bunching the towels up in their arms and taking them away
  • One tourist said the policy ’caused confrontation between pool staff and guests’

British holiday-goers have been left fuming after Mallorca hotel staff removed towels from sun loungers to stop tourists from hogging the best spots by the pool.

A clip of the ‘sunbed wars’ shows staff walking along the poolside and gathering up any towels left by holiday-makers intending to reserve groups of loungers.

Two workers at the Protur Playa Cala Millor Hotel snatched up the towels, bunching them up in their arms and taking them away in what appeared to be an effort to put a stop to what has been dubbed by some as ‘selfish’ behaviour.

According to reviewers of the hotel, the policy requires that no sunbeds be reserved using towels before 10am each morning – meaning that staff will remove any towels belonging to tourists who don’t adhere to the rule.

Furious Brits have since blasted the hotel for their ‘ridiculous rule’ that stops tourists from nabbing spots by the pool early in the day while they go for breakfast.

But while some were enraged, others have praised the staff for clamping down on the ‘selfish’ behaviour.

Andrea Keifer posted the video to TikTok last year, which has since received a mix of anger and praise from users. She captioned the video: ‘Sun bed wars! Great entertainment – Jimmy says no reserving sunbeds’ – appearing to refer to the entertainment manager.

One user joined Andrea in commending the staff, commenting: ‘good on them.’

Another said: ‘That’s what needs to be done every morning’.

‘We were there 2 weeks ago and people were getting the best beds from 6:30am. This hotel is fantastic and its great the staff are doing this.’ another user wrote.

Continuing to find humour in the clip, one person said they ‘would love to see a video of them coming to there sunbeds.’

Another enraged user said it was ‘disgusting how someone thinks it’s ok put there stuff in then go off for the day when someone could be using it.’

But others were also angry at the hotel’s policy, even voicing their frustration on the hotel’s TripAdvisor page.

A holiday-maker named Tracey H left a recent review for the hotel last month, calling the policy ‘ridiculous’.

‘Absolutely ridiculous rule of sunbeds. she said. ‘You can’t even go for breakfast and towels are taken off. What about all the towels that are down all day after half ten and they’re gone all day. You come on holiday to chill if you want a chilled holiday don’t book here.’

One user revealed that the policy had meant that ‘some are taking breakfast to their sunbeds’ to save their spot for the morning.

Reviewer Steve S, who said he went away with his partner for the week, wrote: ‘Needless to say this caused confrontation between pool staff (sunbed police) and guests which is not what you want to see or hear on holiday.

‘So what happened in turn was people breakfasted alone while their respective partner kept the sunbed police at bay. Quite farcical really.’

Another expressed his exasperation with British tourists for ‘feeling the need to go to reserve Sunbeds at he crack of dawn’.

‘I even saw one guy hold court, reserving 4 sunbeds at the same spot every morning until his other half and then another couple turned up an hour later,’ one reviewer from Glasgow said.

‘I laughed from my balcony having my coffee at the state of it; they even took turns going for breakfast! Come on fellow Britons, you don’t go on holiday to get to the pool at 7-30am! God only knows what the hosts think!’

‘These holiday makers are so sad and frankly really selfish the way they bag the bed,’ another declared.
