Brits are discovering a gripping series lurking on BBC iPlayer nearly seven years after it was released.
Fans of the drama have called it ‘better than Narcos’ and are amazed that it did not receive more critical acclaim across six seasons.
Although Snowfall, starring Damson Idris as Franklin Saint, was first released in America in July 2017 on FX, the BBC had broadcast rights this side of the Atlantic and premiered the show on BBC Two three months later.
One viewer only discovered it this year and said: ‘Couldn’t find Snowfall on Netflix and Prime was asking me to buy/rent.
‘Mans moved to the most unlikely place and found it for free. Thank you BBC iPlayer!’

The US series follows its characters at the dawn of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles
Fans have declared Snowfall ‘better than Narcos’ and in the bracket of many of the finest crime dramas of all time
Snowfall is set in Los Angeles in the 1980s at the beginning of America’s crack cocaine epidemic.
It follows the stories of different characters caught up in that emerging world, principally Franklin, a young drug dealer.
Fans of the show hold it in extremely high regard, commenting on X: ‘Watched 3 episodes of snowfall and it’s already better than Narcos…
‘Binged all of Snowfall and it’s elite. Better than Ozark and joins the likes of The Wire, BB [Breaking Bad], BCS [Better Call Saul], and all of Narcos.’
And critics agree with this evaluation, with the show given a 92 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, its presence at major awards has been minimal, with many amazed that the show itself, or its lead, was not nominated at the last round of TV gongs after its 2023 finale.
Fans on X said: ‘Wait Damson Idris didn’t get any nominations for Snowfall?…
‘Snowfall not getting any nominations is CRIMINAL…
‘Not up for discussion, Damson Idris is the best actor out right now. He deserves an Oscar, Emmy, or what ever other awards they give out lol. The range he showed in snowfall was crazy. Hats off…
Set in the 1980s, Snowfall lasted six 10-episode seasons, with the finale coming last year
Idris received praise for his performance in the final season in particular
Many commenters on X were amazed that Snowfall and its lead were not recognised more by the round of TV gongs following its finale
‘That Snowfall finale was a Damson Idris Masterclass…
‘Wow. That Snowfall series finale had me CRYINGGG. To see Franklin’s journey thru this series is mindblowing. Damson Idris needs all the awards for this performance.’
However, his work in the series has seen the Londoner rise up in the odds for the next James Bond.
Any Brits who are yet to discover the series, but do not have a TV licence, can also stream Snowfall’s six ten-episode series on Disney+.
