British Virgin Islands before and after Hurricane Irma

These shocking before and after satellite photos show the devastation wrought on the British Virgin Islands by Hurricane Irma.

The first of the two images, provided by the NASA Earth Observatory, reveals the islands decked in a verdant green, while on the second the territory is coloured brown.

Five people died on the British overseas territory during the category five storm and hundreds more have been left without running water or electricity.

British billionaire Richard Branson spent the storm in his wine cellar while his island was devastated.

He called for a ‘Marshall Plan’ to help the Caribbean recover from the devastation, a reference to the multibillion-dollar U.S. program that helped rebuild Western European after the devastation of World War Two. 

He said: ‘We must get more help to the islands to rebuild homes and infrastructure and restore power, clean water and food supplies.’
