The San Francisco 49ers have locked up starting quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive extension.

Purdy and the Niners have agreed to terms on a five-year, $265million contract extension according to multiple reports.

With this deal, Purdy now sits among the top ten highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL by average annual value.

At $53million per year, Purdy now sits tied for seventh with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff on the list.

He’s just $100k a year behind Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in sixth. Ahead of that, there’s a four-way tie for second at $55m per year held by Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, and Jordan Love. The highest paid player in the NFL is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott at $60m/year.

This upcoming season was set to be the last one on Purdy’s rookie deal, where he was set to have a cap hit of $5.365million. He would have hit unrestricted free agency.

This contract has $181m in total guaranteed salary, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. That includes $165.05m guaranteed within the first three years of the deal.

It’s the largest contract that a ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ has ever earned in the NFL and is the crowning (financial) achievement in Purdy’s career.

After being taken with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Iowa State, Purdy was not expected to be a performer for the 49ers in his rookie season.

But a series of unfortunate events with the Niners QB Room led to Purdy rising from being a third-stringer to the starter.

The Niners began the season with the hopes that 2021 third-overall pick Trey Lance could lead them to victory. But after just two games, he went down with a season-ending ankle injury.

Up stepped Jimmy Garoppolo. He did well for the Niners before he too went down with a season-ending injury in Week 13.

Purdy replaced him and helped lead San Francisco to an NFC Championship game before he suffered a UCL tear. He played through it, but the Niners still lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The following season, Purdy stayed healthy and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl LVIII appearance. They lost in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last year, Purdy stayed healthy but lost a majority of his top pass-catching targets to injuries. Running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle, and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk all suffered injuries.
