Disgraced NRL star Bronson Xerri has refused to open up about the drug scandal that saw him booted from the game.

The Cronulla Sharks rising star was suspended in May last year after testing positive for anabolic steroids following two drug tests in September.

The now 20-year-old has challenged the four-year ban, but is still waiting to hear the outcome of the NRL Appeals Tribunal.

Xerri remained tight-lipped on his doping scandal but admitted the last 10 months had been a ‘nightmare’.

‘I’ll tell my story (one day), it’s not what everyone thinks it is. I made a mistake and now I have to pay the consequences,’ he told 9News.

He admitted the scandal was solely his wrongdoing, confessing it was ‘all on myself and it’s a mistake I did’.

The centre – who scored 13 tries for the Sharks during a stunning debut year in 2019 – admitted his mental health had suffered immensely in the aftermath of the ban.

‘I was just staying home and thinking about everything, it just didn’t seem real to me. I haven’t even watched a game of football yet and I haven’t even touched a football.’

Xerri also claimed the NRL hadn’t sent anyone to check up on him following his ban, but said he ‘accepted what’s happened’.

While Xerri is still in the early stages of his suspension, he wants to make his family proud again and continue working on his career.

‘That was the hardest part, to tell my family and to let them go through what I was going through. It is what it is.’
