Brothers sell renovated Melbourne home for $1.7 million

An incredible renovation of a family home in Melbourne has left two brothers $1.7 million richer, after they sold the property for double what they paid.

Five years ago the Staunton brothers bought the rundown Ascot Vale estate, in Melbourne’s inner north-west, for $675,000.

Since then, John and Andy Staunton, along with Andy’s wife Cathie, have completed a renovation The Block contestants would be proud of.

The trio bought the then three-bedroom, one bathroom Victorian home together and spent six months clearing out the interior alone, according to Domain.

The stunning property went under the hammer on Saturday, attracting five bidders all vying for the Queens Avenue home.

While bidding began at $1.2 million, it quickly climbed in $50,000 jumps and soared past the $1.4 million reserve.

A final bid of $1.7 million, way above the area’s median house price of $1,102,500, went to a local young family.

The plaster boards were also removed and the renovators fitted a new roof as well, only keeping the original frame.

Auction day was a ‘nerve-racking experience’ for the family members, but it paid off.

It felt like grand final morning when your team’s in the grand final, not knowing how the day will turn out,’ John said.
