Bruno Fernandes is reportedly pushing for a contract that would make him one of Manchester United’s top earners alongside three team-mates.

The Portuguese midfielder was a rare positive for the Red Devils as they endured a woeful season under Erik ten Hag.

The 29-year-old scored 14 goals across all competitions as United ended the campaign with a FA Cup triumph after beating Manchester City in the final.

Fernandes has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further year and has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent weeks.

He signed a new four-year deal in 2022 which sees him currently earn around £240,000 a week.

However, as reported by the Guardian, Fernandes feels undervalued and is keen to be in the same bracket as the club’s top earners Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro.

Rashford earns around £360,000 a week after signing a new bumper deal last summer, while Sancho is on around £300,000. Meanwhile, Casemiro, who has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, earns about £350,000 a week.

The report claims that Sir Jim Ratcliffe sees Fernandes as United’s best player and the club are not actively looking to sell him.

However, at the age of 29, Fernandes is aware that his next contract should be lucrative. The playmaker is said to be unsure about the direction the club is heading towards and wants to know who will replace Ten Hag if the Dutchman is sacked.

The United captain stressed last month that he wants to remain at the club, writing in The Players’ Tribune.

Fernandes also added that he needs to have his ambitions matched.

He wrote: ‘I love to step out at Old Trafford more than anything in the world. I don’t want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream.

‘I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club. If you go talk to any fan, they will tell you the same thing. We want to compete for the league. We want to be playing Champions League football. We want to be in cup finals. That is the standard. That is what I want. That is what you all deserve.’I just want to keep fighting. I want to be here. My family wants to be here.’

Since signing for United in January 2020, Fernandes has made 233 appearances, while he has scored 79 goals and has provided 66 assists.

If United were to lose Fernandes then it would be a significant blow, especially given that they are looking to rebuild.

Although they won the FA Cup, United endured a difficult campaign after a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League and a group stage exit in the Champions League.

United’s budget for the summer transfer window is only just over £35million in cash, but the club’s co-owners INEOS are looking to raise more funds by selling players.
