Brunswick shopping centre stabbing as Barkly Square shopping centre evacuated in Melbourne

Two people have been allegedly stabbed by a knifeman at a busy shopping centre in Melbourne.   

The attacker allegedly knifed the shoppers at a Coles in Barkly Square shopping centre on Sydney Road at Brunswick at 8am on Monday. 

Staff were forced to lock themselves inside their nearby stores while the attack unfolded.

‘There’s a guy running around with a knife and he stabbed a customer in the Coles supermarket,’ one person said.

‘All of the employees are locked up in their various shops.’

Police arrested the alleged attacker before he was taken to hospital to be treated for self-inflicted wounds. 

Two men were also taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. 

Officers have cordoned off the area with police tape. 

Barkly Square released a statement saying that staff were assisting police. 

‘Police are attending and we are assisting them with their inquiries,’ a spokesperson said.

‘As this is a police matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time.’

The incident has caused minor delays to public transport with Route 19 trams to Flinders Street running behind schedule.
