Brydon Carse grateful for England’s backing as 29-year-old makes successful international return after three-month ban for placing over 300 bets in two-year span

Brydon Carse has thanked England for sticking by him following his three-month betting ban.

Carse, 29, was immediately selected in all three international formats once his suspension for breaking gambling protocols was served and on Saturday he returned his second-best 50-over figures for England, chipping in with runs from No 8 too, in an otherwise underwhelming defeat that sent Australia 2-0 up.

The Durham all-rounder, who is on a two-year central contract, was found to have placed more than 300 bets between 2017 and 2019.

But the national selectors retained belief in his cricketing ability, naming the uncapped Test player in the squad for next month’s tour of Pakistan and, after taking three for 75 and scoring 26 at Headingley, he said: ‘They’ve been incredibly supportive. I’m just looking forward to playing as much cricket in an England shirt as possible.

‘Rob Key’s been very communicative with me and everyone around the support structure has given me everything I’ve needed to get back playing.’

Carse’s high-end pace and exaggerated bounce saw him lined up for a Test debut in Leeds two years ago, at the start of the Bazball era, but injury struck. This weekend, Australia made the most of the new ball coming on to the bat, taking him for 63 in his first six overs, before two wickets in two balls contributed to a collapse from 145 for three to 221 for nine.

Intent on building his stamina, Carse could bowl with both red and white balls in today’s pre-match practice in Durham.

He said: ‘I’m making sure I bowl enough overs in training to keep my loads up, but the way the schedule is, I’m fully focused on white-ball and the adjustments will be done in Pakistan.’
