Brydon Carse suffers Test heartbreak as positive Covid-19 result halts fast bowler’s potential debut for England against India

  • Brydon Carse’s potential Test debut was halted following a positive Covid test
  • The 26-year-old was in the reckoning for his debut against India at Headingley
  • However, his positive Covid result meant he missed out on a call up to the side

Durham fast bowler Brydon Carse missed out on a potential Test debut after testing positive for Covid-19 towards the end of his stint with Northern Superchargers in the Hundred.

South African-born Carse, 26, made his one-day debut against Pakistan in July, having been part of England’s emergency squad led by Ben Stokes following positive tests within the first-team dressing room.

But after returning a positive test himself, he was forced into quarantine, missing both the Superchargers’ final game, against Birmingham Phoenix on August 17, and Durham’s Royal London One-Day Cup final defeat by Glamorgan two days later.

It is understood that the pacy Carse, who impressed during the ODIs against Pakistan — taking six wickets at 22 and scoring useful runs from No 9 — would have been on standby for the ongoing third Test against India at Headingley had he been available.

With his county colleague Mark Wood ruled out after injuring his shoulder during the second Test at Lord’s, and Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes and Olly Stone already missing, Carse has come into the Test reckoning.

Although born in Port Elizabeth, Carse has a UK passport and qualified for England in 2019.
