An Australian mum has shared how she transformed Kmart cabinets into a stylish sideboard after she was quoted $4,500 for a similar design.

The crafty woman, from New South Wales, spent a tenth of the quoted price painting three of Kmart’s $99 Slatted Storage Cabinets a deep green colour, adding some new handles and spray painting the legs copper.

‘Had a quote for a custom sideboard and it was $4.5k so got three slatted storage units and painted them to match my kitchen,’ she wrote in a post to the Kmart Home Décor and Hacks Facebook group.

After being quoted $4,500 for a custom sideboard, a thrifty woman transformed some Kmart cabinets into a stylist storage solution that cost her a tenth of the price

‘Swapped the handles for the half moon ones and spray painted the handles and legs copper. All up cost me about $450.’

The home stylist used Kmart’s large half moon handles that come in gold and cost just $9.50 for a pack of two.

She added the colour of the cabinets and her unique kitchen was called Liquorice Green and gave some handy tips to those wanting to try the DIY for themselves.

‘A hint if you are going to paint them. Undercoat with a shellac paint. Also DEFINITELY paint the doors before you assemble. It will save you a world of pain,’ the renovator wrote.

The woman’s post drew in thousands of ‘likes’ and hundreds of comments with people impressed by her handy work and interior design taste.

‘You have done a fabulous job and the cabinets look amazing. I really love the colour scheme,’ one person said while another called the look ‘beautiful and elegant’.

‘In a world of white, this deep colour gives a welcome feel of depth, comfort and earthiness,’ a third wrote.

‘Originally I was going to do a white kitchen but then I found this colour and became obsessed. Everyone said don’t do it but glad I stuck to my guns,’ the woman replied.
