A Buffalo Bills player was left with a bloody head injury after his helmet was knocked off during the game and he was violently slammed to the ground.

Running back Taiwan Jones, 30, lost his helmet as he tried to recover Marcus Murphy’s fumbled punt, but after securing the ball he was bombarded by the Charger’s defense. 

The incident took place on Sunday during the third quarter of the Buffalo Bills game versus the Los Angeles Chargers at New Era Field in Orchard, New York.

After he received the ball, the Chargers piled onto him and a player headbutted him, knocking off Jones’ helmet.

Despite the helmet blunder the play was still live, leading a Chargers player to ram into him and pin Jones to the ground in his own endzone. 

Once he was down he lied there motionless, his hands clutching his head. Players and medics rushed to his side after they realized he was injured. 

He was walked off field with his sweatband covered in blood.

Jones was taken to the locker room for evaluation. Later it was determined he should not return to the field because of the injury.

The play was ruled a touch back and the Chargers were given a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness for knocking Jones to the ground, according to USA Today. 

Officials say referrees should have called out the play that stayed live for too long.  

It’s not clear what his current condition is.

This is Jones’ second season playing for the Buffalo Bills. He spent six years playing for the Oakland Raiders.
