Bunbury: Up to FIFTY children feared injured after a TORNADO rips through youth centre

A tornado has ripped through Bunbury in Western Australia, with fears for dozens of children inside a youth centre that has been torn down by the powerful winds.

Up to 50 kids were inside the Bunbury Police and Community Youth Centre when the storm hit on Friday afternoon, the West Australian newspaper reported.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show how the roof and part of a wall have been severely damaged by the fierce winds. 

At least eight ambulances have been sent to the scene and so far one woman in her 30s has been confirmed as being injured. She was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A man was also taken to hospital from Bunbury Regional Prison, which was also in the path of the tornado.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services first reported that a tornado had hit Bunbury at about 4pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather alert for the area at 4.27pm, predicting thunderstorms with damaging winds and rainfall that could cause flash flooding.
