Burnley are back! Vincent Kompany’s side seal PROMOTION to the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough… as in-form Clarets move 19 points clear of the play-offs and home in on the Championship title

  • Burnley have secured an automatic promotion spot back to the Premier League
  • The Clarets moved 19 points clear of the Play-Off spots after beating Boro away
  • Vincent Kompany’s side have bounced straight back to the top-flight this season

Burnley have secured their place in the Premier League next season after beating Middlesbrough 2-1 on Friday.

The Clarets, managed by former Man City captain Vincent Kompany, moved 19 points clear of third-placed Luton and, in doing so, ensured automatic promotion.

All eyes were on Kompany’s side after Luton, who are fourth in the league table, were unable to win at Millwall and were mathematically ruled out of a top two finish.

It meant that Burnley had to seal a win over Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough side to book their ticket back to the English top-flight, which they did with Ashley Barnes and Connor Roberts on target in a 2-1 win.

Kompany’s side have been frontrunners for the majority of the season and were expected to be one of the teams to finish in the top two at the end of the year.

They’ve suffered just two defeats throughout the Championship season and have been well worthy of their place at the summit of the table.

They’ve also scored the most goals (76) and conceded the fewest (30) goals out of any team in the Championship this year, which pays testament to their dominance.

Twenty-three-year-old forward Nathan Tella, who is currently on loan from Southampton, has had a big role to play in their promotion after notching 17 goals and three assists.

Fans of the Clarets will be ecstatic with how their 2022-23 campaign has gone, given their relegation from the top-flight last season.

The club underwent a number of changes as long-standing manager Sean Dyche departed and City legend Kompany was brought in for the Championship season.

Though there were question marks initially, the Belgian manager has proved to be a brilliant fit at Turf Moor and has helped reinvent the identity in Burnley’s football.

One crucial aspect to that has been the influx of players signed from the Belgian league.

This season, Kompany has brought in eight players from the First Division.

The likes of Manuel Benson, Josh Cullen and Anass Zaroury have proved to be brilliant pieces of recruitment for the soon-to-be Premier League side.

It serves as the first notable achievement of Kompany’s managerial career, after just 10 months in charge at Turf Moor.
