Vincent Kompany joked he needed an ice bath to cool down after the officials left him raging at the end of Burnley’s last-gasp defeat at Aston Villa.

The Burnley boss was upset at two yellow cards given to Sander Berge, who was sent off early in the second half, and the late penalty awarded to Villa from which Douglas Luiz won the game.

He was also furious that Diego Carlos was not punished for handling the ball during a duel with Lyle Foster close to the edge of Villa’s box.

Kompany said: ‘My understanding of some situations in a game was tested today. The ice bath wasn’t enough but I’ll have to move past it by Sunday. I’ve always thought of England as a country of common sense.

‘Where do I start? The first yellow card Sander Berge received was really soft, just a coming together and fully two minutes after the goal. The second yellow card was soft, the penalty was soft.

‘Look at the flow of the game. If you examine how similar offences were handled, then you see it’s disproportionate.

‘Either we allow challenges or we don’t, and I know what type of Premier League I prefer.

‘It’s not even a rant on my part, but it’s the first time I’m asking myself whether I’m getting things wrong or whether it’s something else.

‘There’s a denial of a goalscoring opportunity with the Diego Carlos situation but that’s it, we move on.’
