Burnley owner and ex-Houston Texans star J.J. Watt BLASTS ‘blatant and obvious foul’ that allowed Luton Town to score game-tying goal vs. Clarets

Former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt called out the officials and video review system following a controversial call in Burnley’s 1-1 draw against Luton Town on Friday.

Watt and his wife Kealia invested in Burnley last year and became minority owners in the team following their latest promotion from the English Championship division to the Premier League.

‘I’m new to this ownership thing, so if I get fined by the Premier League, so be it…,’ Watt tweeted along with a video of the goal that allowed Luton to tie the game in the 92 minute.

‘This is as blatant and obvious of a foul as you could have. To miss this on the field AND miss this on VAR is truly disgraceful.

The Houston Texans legend was not the only one to take umbrage with call as Burnley’s manager Vincent Kompany was also critical of the officials and VAR review following the game.

‘I think any ex-pro understands what the striker (Adebayo) is doing in this case,’ Kompany told the BBC.

‘First I expect the referee to see it, none of the Luton players have celebrated, the look of the striker is to the referee to see if he got away with it.

‘Fair play to the striker, he tries his luck, he blocks the goalkeeper. He looks across to the referee and you think surely not. VAR will sort this out. Luton players are not celebrating,’ he added.

‘I thought (Luton) were incredible today, but the moment there the referee has got to get it right.’

During the buildup to the goal Luton attacker Elijah Adebayo was seen crashing into Burnley’s goalkeeper James Trafford and essentially screening him from making a play on the incoming cross.

Trafford was knocked to the ground on the play, while Luton’s Carlton Morris was able to rise up for an uncontested header to tie the game.

‘I don’t know what to say to my players. It’s ridiculous,’ Kompany said. ‘It keeps happening. It’s incredible. It’ll balance off, I hope.

‘This can’t decide a game. Something done by a bit of magic but not this. Not this.’

Burnley would have benefitted much more from taking all three points from the game as well to help them attempt to not only fight their way out of the relegation zone, but also inch closer to Luton in the battle to stay in England’s top division.

Luton currently sit in 18 place in the EPL with 16 points through 20 games played, while Burnley are just behind them in 19 place with 12 points.

Had the goal been ruled off for obstructing the goalkeeper Burnley would have jumped up to 14 points and been sitting right behind Luton who would have had 15 points rather than 16.
