Busy mum reveals how she juggles five businesses with two kids under five

A mum has revealed how she manages to take her kids on morning adventures, run five businesses from home and prioritise self-care without getting burnt out.

Sophie Pearce, who runs a popular pregnancy and new-born podcast from her home in northern NSW, told FEMAIL she and her husband, who are both 30, ‘split everything down the middle’ – meaning they don’t need to consider a nanny.

Except cooking dinner, which her husband Nick does while she winds Poppy, four, and Goldie, two, down from their afternoon adventures.

They even take turns ‘getting up at night’ for their two little ones – although that’s far less frequent now they are toddlers.

‘Everything is equal with us, we just take it in turns who gets up for the kids and then go easy on ourselves the next day,’ she said.

Family time is very important to the doting parents who love getting outside with their kids each morning to ‘tire them out’.

‘When we come home, Goldie has her nap while Poppy has quiet time, and I am generally able to get some work done,’ she said.

Sophie’s business interests are as varied as they are successful – she runs a cooking Instagram page, as well as her own, has an AirBnB, runs a Poshmark closet and co-hosts Beyond the Bump.

‘When people ask what my main job is, I would say co-host of Beyond the Bump podcast which I started with my friend, Jayde Couldwell, at the end of 2019,’ she said.

The podcast creates a safe-space to speak about all stages of pregnancy from conception to birth, postpartum and parenting, she explained.

This means addressing taboo topics and working to help all of their listeners feel supported.

What are Sophie’s five businesses?

1 – Beyond the Bump podcast

2 – Her SVPearce  Instagram account – she has 33,000 followers

3 –  The couple’s Recipearce  Instagram page which has 79,000 followers – Nick is the talent in front of the camera while Sophie runs the page and business side

4 – Their Airbnb home Grounds of Cabarita – a renovated three-bedroom beach shack which fetches $600 per night

5 – Her PoshMark closet – which is similar to a market store for her pre-loved goods and popular with people who enjoy shopping for second-hand designer brands

‘When we first started Beyond the Bump we certainly didn’t foresee it becoming our main job, it started as a passion project as we just wanted to support other mothers out there. Not too long after we launched the podcast, we had brands reaching out to sponsor it and it snowballed from there,’ she said.

Nick, on the other hand, is a part owner of a cafe and a restaurant, but spends most of his time coming up with new meals for ‘Recipearce’ the couple’s food-focused Instagram.

The popular page, which is the result of over a decade in the hospitality industry, started because Sophie’s regular Instagram was inundated with recipe requests.

‘When Recipearce started in 2019, I didn’t really consider it as business. It came about from being sick of people asking me for the recipes of the dishes Nick made for our family. He’s the talent for this one and I do all the behind the scenes work,’ she said.

Their flexibility with work is key – as is their teamwork strategy.

‘If Nick and I are both home we generally take it in turns to do work while the other occupies and plays with the kids.’

They also prioritise self-care, helping them have the energy for their many endeavours.

‘Nick is very good at this, I sometimes jokingly call him the self-care queen cause he is so good at scheduling in time for hobbies and relaxation.

‘He also has this way of knowing when I’m not looking after myself and is able to keep me in check and remind me to take time for myself,’ she said.

Sophie said she considers her Airbnb on Cabarita Beach and Poshmark closet ‘side hustles’ rather than full-time businesses.

‘Airbnb came about as we bought a house back in 2015, our intention was to initially live in it but as we began renovating people began asking to come and stay or have photoshoots there,’ she said.

The $600 per night 1960s beach shack has been ‘pretty much booked out’ since and is very popular with social influencers.

She likes the Poshmark closet because it helps her offload her kids’ old clothes in a sustainable way.

‘I’ve tried many different ways to sell my goods previously – Instagram, markets, you name it. I’ve tried it. I found it to be super easy and a convenient way to make a quick income,’ she said.
