Byram girl dies after being run over by hit and run driver

A 12-year-old has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver after she stepped off the school bus.

Kaitlin Mitchell was seriously injured when she was hit by a motorist who failed to stop in the village of Byram, North Yorkshire, 11 days ago.

Despite the efforts of doctors Kaitlin has now died from her injuries at Leeds General Infirmary.

The collision happened at West Acres at around 3.30pm on Thursday September 28, when Kaitlin got off her school bus, crossed the road and was hit by a red Vauxhall Astra.

Police arrested a local man in his 30s and recovered a vehicle in the nearby town of Knottingley. 

He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Officers are renewing their appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage to assist the investigation.
