Australia is famed worldwide for its coastal lifestyle but just two of our beaches have made it into an influential annual list of best beaches based on reviews by travellers.
And despite its tourist pull and name recognition, the sweeping coastline of Bondi Beach did not make the cut on TripAdvisor’s Best of the Best Beaches for 2023 list released on Wednesday.
Instead, Cable Beach in Broome, Western Australia and Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches, were the Australian strips of sand to crack the top 15 list.
Travel website TripAdvisor analysed tens of millions of reviews submitted by millions of global travellers over the past 12 months.
The online travel site looked at the quality and quantity of ratings for beach experiences to compile the top 15.

Cable Beach was ranked the third best beach in the world.
Its 22km stretch of white sand facing out to the Indian Ocean is famous for its stunning sunsets and iconic shoreline camel rides.
Manly Beach in Sydney ranked 13, with one TripAdvisor user claiming ‘Bondi takes all the credit and attention but Manly is equally good’.
Baia do Sancho on the volcanic island of Fernando de Noronha, 350km off the coast of Brazil, was crowned best beach in the world – climbing six places from last year.
The beach is only accessible by a series of steep ladders and steps and is famous for its turquoise water, white sand and exotic array of wildlife including dolphins, rays, turtles and crabs.
Eagle Beach in Aruba in the Caribbean, came in second place and is praised for its clear water, white sand and for being the widest beach in the area.
Reynisfjara Beach in Vik, Iceland, was fourth and is world-famous for its black sands and imposing rock formations – a striking backdrop used in Game of Thrones.

TripAdvisor describes it as ‘a beach like no other’ which should be admired from the coast as its water is freezing and its waves can reach up to 40metres.
Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos came in at fifth place, Praia da Falesia in Portugal’s Algarve region in sixth, and Radhanagar Beach on India’s Havelock Island in seventh.
Closing the top 10 list was Spiaggia dei Conigli on the Italian island of Lampedusa in eighth place, Varadero Beach in Cuba in ninth and Hawaii’s Kaanapali Beach, on the island of Maui scrapping into 10th spot.
The online travel site also ranked the top 10 best beaches in the South Pacific, with seven Australian beaches making the list.
Cable Beach in Broome, Manly Beach in Sydney and Emily Bay on Norfolk Island claimed the top three spots, followed by Mooloolaba Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas, Queensland, ranked sixth, while another Queensland beach – Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island – came in at seventh.
Turquoise Bay in Exmouth, Western Australia was the last Aussie beach to claim a spot, coming in at ninth on the list.

Head of Editorial at TripAdvisor Sarah Firshein said this year’s list comprised of some ‘delightful surprises’ and reflected the community’s desire for experiences.
‘As a huge beach fan myself, I know the impossible-to-resist allure of sunshine and turquoise water – and certainly, there’s plenty of that on this year’s list,’ Ms Firshein said.
‘In addition to the much-loved beaches of the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Hawaii, our community is really looking to kick up their experiences, even exploring cooler destinations like Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland.
‘So whether you’re looking to pack a windbreaker or a swimsuit, our list has something for a wide range of travellers – and it might even convince the most ardent beach sceptics to embrace some time on the sand.’
