A young woman has died from stab wounds and a man is in custody after a dramatic police chase overnight.

Police rushed to a unit on Short Street in Caboolture, about 44km north of Brisbane, at about 8:30pm following reports a woman had been assaulted.

A woman in her 20s was found with stab wounds at the scene. She was rushed to Caboolture Hospital in a critical condition but died from her injuries.

At about 10:40pm officers flagged a Holden Commodore as a vehicle of interest travelling northbound on the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Coast.

After a dramatic pursuit, police deployed a tyre deflation device.

The Commodore allegedly crashed into a police car as it continued on the highway before the 29-year-old driver was stopped and taken into custody.

Police will allege the man and woman were known to each other.

The Morayfield man was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition where he remains under police guard.

Two male police officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Both the Commodore and the police car were damaged in the highway crash.

A homicide investigation has been launched into the woman’s death with the Caboolture unit being treated as a crime scene.

Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage of the crash on the Bruce Highway near Yandina or from the Short Street area to come forward.
