One young California black bear was far more scared of humans than a man was of it.

Jared Hartman spotted a juvenile bear coming out of a lake carrying a rainbow trout while he was camping near Mammoth Lakes, California.

The animal is oblivious to his presence and happily hops out of the water holding its prize.

However, the beast quickly abandons his trophy after realizing the fish was already dead and possibly rotting.

Still ignorant of Hartman, the bear begins sauntering in his direction before suddenly stopping and scrambling away into the brush.

‘It was obvious the bear was more afraid of me than I was of it,’ Hartman said.

‘I then stopped following it, because I did not want it to feel I was chasing it or harassing it, and I was afraid it might run in front of a moving vehicle if I scared it too badly,’ Hartman said.

The bear appeared to be a juvenile, just young enough to have been pushed out on its by its mother so that it could take care of itself.
