Call The Midwife fan favourites to return for the next series despite exit fears

Call The Midwife fan favourites are set to return for the next series despite storylines suggesting that they might leave. 

The news which is sure to delight viewers comes just days after the BBC announced that the popular TV show will air until at least 2026. 

And now, the return of much loved characters Trixie, Matthew, Monica Joan and Cyril, has been confirmed. 

Viewers of the show feared that Trixie Franklin, who is played by Helen George, might leave the drama after her wedding to Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix).

The scenes set to air next week, reveal that she will finally get her happily ever after, but many fans were left worrying that the couple might leave east London.

Olly told The Mirror: ‘Their focus is on changing things around them. It doesn’t seem to be remotely in their characters to just hang that all up now and enjoy the quiet life. That’s not who they are.’

Actress Helen added: ‘They’ve got so much work to do there and they’re both very driven, so I can’t see them moving away.’ 

There was also fears for Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) who is currently ill with hepatitis and what this would mean for her husband Cyril (Zephryn Taitte).

A source told MailOnline that Trixie, Matthew, Monica Joan and Cyril will all be returning for the next series.

The BBC has confirmed that Call The Midwife will return for two more seasons, keeping it on air until at least 2026.

Fans of the show will be delighted as bosses – who had already announced series 13 – have now commissioned a further two.

Filming for the next series of the much-loved drama is due to begin in spring.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated final episode of the current series – which promises of a wedding between Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew (Olly Rix) – will air on Sunday 26 February.

The show is set in the 1950s and 1960s in London’s East End – and focuses on a group of midwives in a nursing convent.

Call The Midwife regularly attracts millions of hits, including the most recent Christmas special which received 8.5 million viewers, making it one of the most successful shows on British TV.
