Canadian expat complains about the noise of the kookaburra waking her every morning

Canadian expat: This is the ‘hellish’ reason I can never fall asleep in Australia – as she describes the ‘satanic ritual’ she faces every day

  • A Canadian woman said ‘satanic’ Australian birds are ruining her sleep
  • She blames the kookaburra for waking her up at dawn every day

A Canadian expat is blaming Australian wildlife for ruining every chance she’s had at a lie-in since she moved Down Under.

Amanda, who now lives on the mid north coast in NSW, complained that the laughing cry of the kookaburra sounds like a ‘satanic ritual’.

Aussies were not happy with the criticism of the native bird, but people from other countries agreed the noise is ‘insane’.

The young woman runs a TikTok page called ‘Australia is weird’ and often comments on things she finds unusual about the country.

‘When you wanna sleep in but you live in Australia and the birds start performing their satanic rituals at 6am,’ Amanda said on TikTok.

She recorded the loud bird song of the kookaburra, which is known to sound like a shrill cackle or laugh.

The native Australian bird tends to make the most noise at dawn and dusk to establish their territory.

Their call can sound like a chorus of laughter because one bird starts with a low chuckle, then throws it’s head back in laughter, and the whole family often join in.

Why do kookaburras ‘laugh’?

The call is used to establish territory for families of birds, often the entire family will join in creating a cacophony of laughter.

Aussies slammed her for the comments.

‘You’re lucky if its 6am! That’s a lie in!’ one man said.

Others joked that the birds are the reason Australian’s are known to be early risers.

Others said the noise of the kookaburra should be appreciated as it’s ‘beautiful’.

‘Can’t ask for a better morning.. sleep early and wake up with them,’ one man commented.

However, non-Australians could not believe the noise was actually made by birds.

‘I could never. NEVER. I’d go mad,’ one woman said.

‘What?!! Those noises? As if they are laughing at your misery,’ another joked.

‘I hated visiting Australia because of this. I feel like I couldn’t enjoy the trip and no one warned me about it,’ another wrote.
