Canadian tries to explain State of Origin – and gets slammed by Aussie footy fans despite getting his facts RIGHT

A Canadian social media influencer has been shut down by Aussie footy fans despite doing a good job of explaining State of Origin for people who know next to nothing about rugby league.

Josiah Hein – who has more than 110,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram – posted a video on Wednesday in which he breaks down the basics of the clash between NSW and Queensland, just hours before game one was due to kick off in Sydney.

‘Guys, today is like the Super Bowl of Australia – well, like the all-star game,’ Hein began.

‘A popular sport in Australia is called rugby league, in Sydney and Brisbane, the states of New South Wales and the state of Queensland.

‘If you’re from Queensland, you’re a Maroon, and if you’re from New South Wales, you’re a Blue.

‘They play each other like an all-star game, or like the Olympics, like Canada versus USA, and it’s intense. 

‘Dude, I’m pumped!’

Unlike many newcomers to the sport, Hein correctly identified the code as rugby league instead of simply ‘rugby’, got the names of the teams right and correctly said the matches are like all-star games.

However, while his first claim that the matches are like the ‘Super Bowl of Australia’ will ring true for some diehard Origin fans, plenty Aussies who prefer AFL to rugby league couldn’t wait to tell him how wrong he was.

‘Victorian here. we couldn’t give a s**t about state of origin. AFL all the way,’ one wrote.

‘The Super Bowl of Aussie sport is the AFL grand final in Melbourne,’ another commented.

‘Only 2 states involved. Pretty much only matters in 2 states. The rest of Australia doesn’t care,’ added a third fan.

Other similar comments included ‘super bowl of Australia the Australian football league premiership by a long shot’, ‘AFL is way bigger than NRL. Aus Super Bowl = AFL Grand final’ and even ‘nah superbowl of Australia is the boxing day test!’

Another fan told Hein he’d pronounced Maroon incorrectly, as many Aussies say ‘Mah-roan’.
