Canberra couple pose as government workers to see babies

  • A woman and man pretending to be FACS caseworkers approached a mother 
  • The pair knocked on the woman’s door in Canberra at 4pm on Friday
  • They showed identity cards and told her they were there to check on the children

A Canberra mother allowed a man and woman pretending to be Family and Community Services caseworkers into her home on Friday, prompting a warning from police.

The woman, who was at her Karabar home with her two children at the time, was approached by the pair around 4pm, police said.

The man and woman showed the mother what appeared to be identity cards and told her they were at the home to check on the welfare of the children.

‘The mother stated the children were asleep and told the pair she could call them to return when they woke; however, the pair stated they would wait,’ police said.

‘A short time later, the mother presented the children to the pair in the lounge room. After checking the children and their bedroom, the pair left the home’.

The mother soon became suspicious and called Queanbeyan FACS, who told her they had no record of the visit.

Investigators from Monaro Local Area Command have begun investigating the incident and released composite images of the two people on Wednesday.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance and in his 30s. He had a slim build with a fair complexion, short dark hair and a prominent nose. He was last seen wearing a business shirt and trousers.

The woman was also describes as being of Caucasian appearance and in her 20s, with a medium build, a tanned complexion and medium-length curly hair with a dyed streak. She was last seen wearing an orange blazer with a dark-coloured skirt.
