Canelo Alvarez will earn DOUBLE Gennady Golovkin’s purse for highly-anticipated trilogy bout

Canelo Alvarez is set to earn one of his highest paydays of his career when he takes on Gennady Golovkin for the third time on Saturday.

The undisputed super middleweight champion will reportedly take home a guaranteed £40million for the trilogy bout, more than double GGG’s £17million purse.

Backed by the financial might of DAZN and Matchroom Boxing, the figures are by far the highest paid between the three fights, with the guaranteed totals making up just one source of revenue that the fighters will collect.

In addition to their purse, both fighters will also earn a cut of the pay-per-view and sales from the live gate.

For their maiden encounter in 2017, Alvarez was paid a guaranteed £4million while GGG earned a more modest £2.5million in a fight that ended in a split draw.

When the pair rematched the following year, Alvarez was again guaranteed £4million while his Kazakh opponent saw his purse increased to £3.5million in a bout that once again ended with a contentious decision from the judges.

The initial figures however, do not provide the full picture of how much the fighters stand to earn through the additional incentives included in their contracts. 

Including revenue generated from international sales and the crowd in attendance, Alvarez ultimately took home around £40million in their second bout, with GGG also enjoying a significant bump on his guaranteed purse at £25million.

The bout marks the final clash on Alvarez’s two-fight contract with Eddie Hearn, after he suffered a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Dmitry Bivol back in May.
