Car crashes through Florida restaurant, killing customer

A woman was killed and two others left seriously injured after a vehicle slammed into a Pollo Tropical restaurant.

Zamara Gonzales, 41, was killed Friday afternoon. She was seated at a booth by the window of the restaurant in Davie, Florida, and was trapped under the car for about 15 minutes.

Surveillance footage captured the crash between a red Toyota Matrix driven by Jesus Bisball and a black Mercedes-Benz E550 driven by Stacy Masik-Mahaffy.

The driver of the Matrix lost control and plowed through the restaurant.

Firefighters freed Gonzales and gave her chest compressions. She was then taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

‘I mean, everyone was just trying to get a grip on [the car] and lift it. The floor was pretty wet, so no one could really move without slipping,’ a witness said to Local 10.

Gonzales leaves behind two children. She is originally from Marianao, Cuba, according to her Facebook page.

The flying debris also injured a man named Steve Pierre and his seven-year-old son Cameron.

Pierre was not seriously hurt, but his 18-month old daughter was sitting in a stroller just inches away.

Cameron suffered from a lacerated liver, broken rib and a pulmonary hematoma, but doctors expect him to survive his injuries.

The Gonzalez family told Pierre that she had taken a break from shopping when she went to the Pollo Tropical.

‘That could have been me or my kids,’ said Pierre to News 7. ‘We were literally inches away.’

The Gonzalez family has begun preparing for a funeral to be held during the holiday season.

Masik-Mahaffy apparently ran a stop sign, causing the Matrix to lose control and run over a median and into the restaurant.

Investigators say the driver of the Matrix accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake after the vehicle collision.

‘I did feel the impact. I got hit in the back of the head, I got hit on my shoulder,’ said Pierre.

It is currently unknown if any charges will be filed.
