Car explodes into flames at a Melbourne petrol station

  • A courier driver has accidentally reversed onto a Melbourne petrol bowser
  • Realising his mistake immediately, the quick-thinking man lept from his vehicle
  • Moments later the vehicle and nearby fuel pump burst into flames
  • An attendant at the petrol station turned the gas off to stop the blaze spreading

A car exploded into flames at a Melbourne petrol station just metres away from the bowsers as the courier driver behind the wheel was able to leap to safety.

The young driver of the car admitted that he hit the accelerator instead of the brake when he pulled into the station at Glen Waverley in Melbourne’s south-east.

As he tried to position the car into a parking spot he backed onto the bowsers, before quickly realising his mistake and jumping out of the vehicle.

Within seconds the bowser and his car burst into flames, with a quick-thinking attendant turning the gas off to stop the blaze spreading to other fuel pumps.

The entire station was engulfed in flames as nearby shop workers rushed outside to take photos and videos.

In the video footage released of the accident pedestrians can be seen walking past the inferno with reckless abandon, almost unaware of the danger right beside them.

Incredibly no one was injured throughout the ordeal.
