Cardi B, Chance the Rapper to judge hip hop competition series for Netflix titled Rhythm + Flow

Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and T.I. are in the judge’s seat in teaser for new hip hop competition series Rhythm + Flow

Netflix is continuing its attempt to dominate all areas of television with a new musical competition reality series.

While leading competition shows like American Idol and The Voice have been relegated to the traditional networks, Netflix’s new Rhythm + Flow, the trailer for which dropped this weekend, will focus specifically on the hip hop segment.

The teaser for the show reveals some very buzzy judges from the world of hip hop and music in general: Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and Tip T.I. Harris.

Three’s a charm: Netflix’s new Rhythm + Flow, the trailer for which dropped this weekend, will feature (from left) Tip T.I. Harris, Cardi B and Chance the Rapper as judges

The clip opens on a shot of Cardi, decked out in a hot pink straight-haired wig, getting out of a car—and she proceeds to appear in roughly ten other wildly different looks throughout the rest of the 35-second video.

The ‘unprecedented 3 week event,’ as the trailer touts, will follow the three judges as they search for new talent in the genre, and pit them against one another in an all-out rap battle while a studio audience looks on.

‘Creativity doesn’t have blueprints,’ T.I. says at the opening of the clip.

‘These streets below us, that’s where we’re going to find the next hip hop sensation,’ we hear while a series of aerial urban shots are displayed.

According to Netflix’s description of the show, the streets in question are Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.

That description reveals that the judges are ‘searching for hip-hop’s best, undiscovered talent,’ and asks, ‘who will scrap their way to the top for a shot at the shine?’

The trailer itself alternates between glamour shots of the three judges, and rushed, kinetic footage of unnamed talent taking the stage in a dark studio with colored lights, or recording their voices on specialized mics.

‘Let the games begin!’ Cardi exclaims at one point, with one of her trademark guffaws, while she tosses a strawberry in her mouth on a private jet.

‘This is hip hop’s first legit TV competition’ is another soundbite heard in the clip, and the performances definitely look legit and more: pyrotechnics and smoke machines make the performances look like they’d be fit for the big names judging the show as well.

‘It’s gonna be litty like a f**king titty!’ Cardi exclaims again, giving the show’s proceedings her special seal of approval.

Rhythm + Flow drops on Netflix on October 9 — and since it’s a 3 week event, presumably the streaming giant will only be releasing episodes one at a time.
