Carlo Ancelotti admits he would ‘LOVE’ to see Xabi Alonso become Real Madrid manager but insists he is ‘happy’ in charge at the LaLiga giants amid speculation around his future

Carlo Ancelotti hopes that former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will one day be given the chance to manage the club, but insisted he currently has no plans to leave his current managerial role to give the Spaniard the opportunity.

The Los Blancos head coach has guided the club to a strong start in the new LaLiga season but dropped points for the first time in the weekend’s 3-1 derby hammering against Atletico Madrid.

Fallout from the defeat has created renewed scepticism over Ancelotti’s future, despite him surviving the summer where he was consistently linked with an exit and possible takeover of the Brazil national team.

Alonso is currently forging his own coaching career and is impressing in his second season at Bayer Leverkusen with the German top-flight side currently level on points with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s league clash against Las Palmas, Ancelotti praised Alonso as the ‘best’ and expressed his desire to see the 41-year-old return to Spain’s capital.

‘I know him, because I had him as a player. He has an enormous knowledge of football and he is doing great at Leverkusen,’ he said.

‘He’s someone I know, someone I love, and I hope that him, like Raul or Arbeloa, can one day coach Real Madrid. Because it is the best. 

‘Because I love them very much. I hope one day they can coach this club.’ 

Other former Madrid stars Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Gonzalez both already hold coaching positions within the club’s academy set-up.

Arbeloa is Real Madrid under-19s Manager and Raul is in charge of the Castilla team.

Despite, Ancelotti’s current deal expiring at the end of the season, the 64-year-old appears adamant he wants to continue his spell in charge of the famous club.

Speculation has continued to grow around his position, but the Italian insisted he remains ‘happy’ at the Santiago Bernabeu.

‘Everyone knows that I am very happy here, but it’s not the moment to speak about that. 

‘There are a lot of games now, and we will have time to speak about that in the future.’
