Carmarthenshire police quiz teen boy after woman found dead

Police are quizzing a schoolboy after a dog rescue volunteer was found battered to death in her remote farmhouse.  

Fiona Scourfield, 54, died of head injuries last night at her 10-acre smallholding near the village of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire in Wales.

Police have cordoned off the scene today while forensic officers carry out their investigations.

A neighbouring farmer said: ‘Everyone is in shock, it’s just unbelievable.’

Animal lover Fiona kept chickens, goats and dogs at her small farm near the village of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. 

The neighbour said: ‘Fiona was a lovely lady, she had lived here all her life and was popular and well-thought of because off her charity work.

‘She was always taking in strays, getting them healthy and re-homing them.’ 

Fiona’s mother and sister who live nearby have been told that she was found dead when police were called to the farm last night.

Another nearby resident said: ‘We heard she had head injuries after being hit by a blunt instrument.

‘It is tragically sad – this is such a quiet area things like this don’t happen here.’

Police said they arrested a 16-year-old boy and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.  

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: ‘We were called to the property at 5.47pm on Tuesday.

‘A 16-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

‘An incident room has been set up and next of kin have been advised and are being supported by specialist officers.’

Police have set up temporary traffic lights outside the farmhouse which stands on the A4066 between St Clears and Laugharne, famous as the home of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
