Mr Brooke said the stranger said, ‘can’t you f***ing read the sign?’ to which he replied he would put his dog on the leash, Nine News reported.

Far from being placated, the man then approached Mr Brooke and attacked him, first with fists, then with a weapon.

‘A knife was brought out whether it was a flick knife or a pocket knife I just don’t remember it was just so quick,’ he said.

Bleeding from two stab wounds – one missing his spine by a fraction – the carpenter ran to his car to call the police.

Mr Brookes recalled being shocked that even after the stabbing the stranger did not run away, continuing to yell abuse at him instead.

‘[He was] goading me to call Triple Zero, “yeah call Triple Zero, do what you’ve got to do”,’ Mr Brookes said.

Police have released a composite image of the attacker, who is described as Caucasian, 183 to 191 centimetres tall and of a slim build.

He was wearing a a black zip down hooded jumper with white and red text on the front.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
