Carpet python caught eating a possum in Brisbane’s south

  • Peter McMaster spotted a python eating a possum while mowing his lawn
  • The father-of-three described the carpet python as about three-metres-long
  • Video shows the snake suspended from a palm tree with the possum in its mouth
  • Mr McMaster said the snake also had a close call with the family’s dog

A python devouring a possum for lunch gave one Queensland man quite the show on Sunday as it dangled from a palm tree over his head with the marsupial in its mouth.

Peter McMaster said he was mowing his lawn at his home in Brisbane’s south when he noticed noises coming from the trees above him.

The father-of-three said he was surprised to see the commotion was coming from a three-metre-long carpet python that had suspended itself from a palm tree in order to grab the possum by its head.

‘Just a bit of nature taking its course,’ Mr McMaster told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The python dangled in the air with the possum precariously hanging from its fangs for 30 minutes as it struggled to lift the marsupial into the tree, he said.

Video shows the python try to pull the possum up, before slipping and almost losing its grip.

It is not the first time the snake has paid his family a visit, he said.

Mr McMaster said he believes the python has been living and hunting in his yard for nearly two months.

‘It was mid-constrict two weeks ago on a flying fox when our Maltese-Shitzu took it on and scared it away, saving the flying fox’s life,’ he said.

It’s only a matter of time before the python puts on another show, Mr McMaster predicted.
