An out-of-control ute has slammed into a bus stop in Melbourne’s south-east seriously injuring two pedestrians.

The horror accident occurred on Frankston Dandenong Road in Carrum Downs at about 3pm on Friday.

Two cars were allegedly driving erratically and ‘possibly racing’ in the moments leading up to the crash, Victorian police alleged.

It appears the white ute mounted the curb and smashed through the bus stop sending parts of the shelter strewn across the path and grassy area, Nine News footage revealed.

The vehicle then careered through a fence of a nursing home.

The pedestrians were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The male driver of the ute was arrested before he was taken to hospital also with serious injuries and remains under police guard.

Police said the driver of a second vehicle was also arrested at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

‘It’s alleged both cars were being driven erratically, possibly racing just prior to the collision,’ a police statement said.

Drivers are told traffic diversions are in place, while all outbound lanes remain closed at Wedge Rd, 7News said.

Motorists are advised to redirect their routes using Thompson Rd and the Mornington Peninsula Fwy.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
