Casualty set to celebrate 75 years of the NHS with groundbreaking episode featuring real medical professionals

BBC drama Casualty is set to mark 75 years of the NHS with a groundbreaking episode.

The standalone show will make history as the only episode to ever feature commentary from real-life medical professionals.

In a break from its traditional format the episode will highlight the extraordinary teamwork and collaboration that goes on across the medical services every day to save lives.

Alongside action from Casualty’s well-known characters in the Holby City hospital, viewers will see commentary from real-life medical professionals talking about the teamwork, collaboration and investment that is involved every single day to care for each individual patient.

The episode will focus on the story of Amartya, a motorbike rider who has been involved in a devastating collision with life threatening injuries.

Mirroring the daily lives of those working for the NHS the episode will showcase the extraordinary efforts made across the length and breadth of the emergency medical services to save him.

From ambulance call handlers, to nurses, paramedics, doctors, HEMS teams, surgeons, and beyond, all will be recognised.

Executive producer of the world’s longest running primetime medical drama Jon Sen has said the aim of the episode is to ‘shine a light on the awe-inspiring work of the doctors, nurses and paramedics who work in the NHS.’

It is set to be a dramatic episode as Amartya will fight for his life in the powerful story that will dramatise the skill and immense teamwork of the NHS.

‘We were thrilled when real medical professionals agreed to be interviewed to offer an insight into the highs and lows of dealing with these cases on a daily basis,’ continued Jon.

‘In this one-off episode the audience gains a truly authentic glimpse behind the curtain to understand what it feels like to stand in the shoes of NHS professionals.’

Not afraid to be creative, the producers at Casualty are known for trying out new features for their episodes.

Last December the show aired its very first ever improvised episode to reflect the difficult realities front-line health care workers are faced with.

The episode focused on paramedics Jan, Iain, Sah and Teddy, who are pushed to breaking point whilst working under pressure.

The special standalone episode will air on Saturday 15th July on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
