Cate’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I was critically acclaimed — garnering her her first ever Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Although the Elizabeth star would go on to play Galadriel in all three Lord of the Rings films, she wouldn’t win her first Academy Award until 2005.

She finally earned her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2005 film The Aviator.

The 54-year-old actress ironically won for portraying a famous American actress in The Aviator film — Katharine Hepburn.

Her first Oscar win made Cate the only actress to ever win an Academy Award for playing another actress in a film.
