Cate also brought her Hollywood glamour on Friday night in a black-and-white Louis Vuitton dress, with a cape flowing out behind her.

She opted for typically subtle make-up including light blush and a rosy lip, while her platinum tresses were neatly pulled back into a bun.

Her unique ensemble stood out with two sequinned silver pockets, allowing her to rest her hands, while a belted waist emphasised her slim frame.

Meanwhile a small slit up the side of her dress added some practical movement while also remaining stylish.

Ahead of the Cannes premiere, Cate spoke about the power of Warwick’s work and what The New Boy means to her, saying: ‘My worldview has been shifted in ways beyond articulation by the films Warwick has made.

‘He’s a singular, mercurial filmmaker, yet there is a beguiling universality to the stories he chooses to tell. He is, quite simply, one of Australia’s greats.’

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Cate was asked what attracted her to the project and how Sister Eileen drew her in as a character.

She said: ‘Well, it’s usually a conversation that starts things for me. As an actor, whether it’s onstage or onscreen, I’m very director driven. And what I mean by that is that the work comes out of those early conversations…

‘When you’re dealing with someone like Warwick who writes, directs and does all the cinematography of his films, the script is just kind of like a template for the idea, right?…

‘Warwick is someone I’ve admired for a while, so we just started talking during the pandemic and the character was actually quite secondary to the conversations…

‘We were exploring themes together and there was this growing desire to work together.

‘Warwick had been brewing on this world for a long time, and the archetypes, internal struggle and framework were all there once he pulled the script out of his sock drawer and showed it to me.

‘But once I stumbled into this thing, it meant that the original character of the priest would be changed to a nun, which had interesting ramifications.’
