Cate Blanchett flop Borderlands is beaten at box office by animated movie that is 15 years old

Cate Blanchett’s new sci-fi comedy Borderlands has been beaten at the box office by an animated movie that is 15 years old.

Based on a popular video game series, Borderlands had the benefit of an all-star cast including Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis and Edgar Ramirez.

But the movie proved to be a spectacular flop, and has now earned just $18,635,378 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

This past weekend was Borderlands’ second weekend in theaters – and it was bested by the remastered edition of a more than decade-old film.

The old movie had a limited 15th anniversary revival run that began August 15, and it has now been extended because it was such a financial success.

The film is Coraline, a tantalizingly off-kilter stop-motion animated feature based on a beloved children’s novel by Neil Gaiman.

Helmed by The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick, Coraline had a formidable voice cast with such names as Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Ian McShane.

Dakota voiced the title character, an 11-year-old girl who stumbles into the Other World, populated by strange, alternate versions of people she knows in real life.

In the Other World, everyone has buttons for eyes – a detail that sets Coraline down the path to discovering a dark and shocking secret.

Coraline was a smash hit when it first came out in 2009, earning a global gross of more than $124 million against a $60 million production budget.

Its re-release this month was also a triumph and has now earned over $20 million, with $12.5 million in the United States and $7.6 million abroad, Collider reports.

This past weekend, Coraline made $8.63 million in the United States, coming in at number five at the domestic box office, per Comscore.

By contrast, Borderlands managed to scrape together just $2,427,379 domestically from August 16-18, according to Box Office Mojo.

Since its release on August 9, Borderlands has earned a dismal $18,635,378 globally, against a production budget that IMDb estimates at $115 million.

Meanwhile the re-release of Coraline has done so well that it has been extended one week, with the end date shifted from August 22 to August 29.

Borderlands was helmed by Hostel director Eli Roth, who is best known for playing the ‘Bear Jew’ in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

In the sci-fi plotline of Borderlands, set across more than one planet, Cate plays a bounty called Lilith who is part of a motley crew of strange beings enlisted by a corporate tycoon to bring back his kidnapped teenage daughter.

Although Cate earned some praise for her performance, the movie came in for a withering response from the critics, with just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.
