An in-flight catering service is now selling ‘gourmet’ airline meals for as little as $2 each because no one is flying.

Gate Gourmet, one of the world’s biggest airline catering companies, has been supplying meals to international airlines flying to and from Australia since 2002.

But the supplier has since opened its doors to the public after the travel industry was forced to cancel flights indefinitely to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Customers can now order from an assortment of economy class meals, including vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, which are cooked by professional chefs.

Customers can order a mixed combo pack for just $40, which includes 20 different meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you want to skip breakfast, there’s a mixed lunch and dinner pack with 10 assorted meals for just $25, which includes chicken and mushroom stew, rigatoni pesto pumpkin, beef massaman curry with jasmine rice, lasagne and more.

All meals come in a microwave and oven safe packaging, ready to heat and eat within two to five minutes. To bake in an oven, simply defrost and bake for 20 minutes at 160 degrees.

To place an order, customers must pick up their meals from a Gate Gourmet outlet in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth – as delivery is not available.

The frozen meals are only available for pick-up from the listed locations in the drop-down menu in the order form online – and the dishes are assorted at random and special requests cannot be packed.

‘As we do not normally sell to the general public, please adhere to your pick-up time chosen on checkout,’ the website said.

Many have shared their glowing reviews online after ordering the airline meals online, with some saying it’s perfect for feeding a family on a budget.

‘It’s a fantastic offer – I’ve bought 20 meals for $50 (lunch and dinner pack). Great to keep in the freezer for a quick lunch or alternative to a takeaway dinner. And helps support the tourism industry,’ one woman said in a Facebook group.

Another said: ‘Nice packaging… good food… I ordered $40 breakfast, lunch and dinner option. Thanks for the offer.’

Others asked whether the meals tasted ‘good’, to which one responded: ‘I am a travel agent, fortunate to have travelled a bit, and I personally quite enjoy airplane food. Definitely great flavours.’
